How We Help
Outreach Programs
Dental Education Programs.
With this outreach program, one of KINDs staff dentists and a dental assistant present a 20- to 30-minute presentation about proper dental hygiene to a classroom. The team begins by showing a brief age-appropriate video that addresses a routine visit to the dentist. The dentist then leads a discussion on oral health and hygiene, dental decay and treatment. It is KINDs mission to focus our education efforts on the importance of preventive care at home and through routine dental visits. We supply the audience with educational collateral and materials as well as a toothbrush for each child in attendance. This program is presented to classroom-size groups of approximately 25 students.
Dental Screenings.
During a dental screening, a KIND dentist or hygienist conducts a general dental health scan of each child's mouth. We assess the child's hygiene habits as well as check for possible decay and other problems that signal a need for immediate attention and possible treatment. During the screening, each child will sit in a portable dental chair while the dentist or hygienist (clad in standard safety gear) examines the child's mouth. In this effort, we are trying to duplicate a quick version of a regular visit to the dentists office.
Comprehensive Oral Exam (Including X-rays).
A comprehensive oral exam entails a visit to one of our dental clinics for a more detailed examination by the KIND dentist. During this check up, the dentist will examine the childs entire oral cavity, including hard and soft tissues and take x-rays, if necessary. Problems are documented and a treatment plan is completed. Cleaning and oral hygiene instruction are included in this visit. Each child becomes a patient of record at the KIND clinic. This service is available to KIND eligible children only (children from low-income families with no private dental insurance).
Comprehensive Dental Care and Treatment.
When a child receives dental care and treatment, they can visit any one of KINDs dental clinics. Children receive necessary restorative care as prescribed by a prior visit during the Comprehensive Oral Exam (see above). The dentist will complete any treatment needed as time allows. For those children with more extensive needs, multiple appointments may be necessary. As is the case when a child receives a comprehensive oral exam, each child remains a patient of record at the KIND clinic, and must be eligible for care (children from low-income families with no private dental insurance). The clinic costs are calculated per visit or per entire day.
