Miles for Smiles
The Miles for Smiles Mobile Dental Clinic is a state-of-the-art dental clinic “on wheels” that enables KIND’s staff and volunteers to provide comprehensive, quality dental care, including emergency care when necessary, to children in rural communities throughout Colorado.
Having logged over 9,000 miles since 1999, KIND has treated more than 6,000 children in the Miles for Smiles van – providing routine treatments like screenings, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, and molar sealants, as well as emergency treatments such as extractions and root canals.
Amazing features
The one-of –a-kind, custom-built 36-foot Airstream Coach features two Adec operatories, a Digora digital x-ray system, and an integrated triangle sterilization center. Other features of KIND’s Miles for Smiles Mobile Dental Clinic include:
- Computer network and DENTRIX software package for charting patient records and scheduling
- Mobile nitrous oxide cart for sedation of patients
- Air Techniques self-contained air abrasion unit
- Laboratory/Support equipment center
- Wheel chair accessible lift
- Reception/desk station
Built by Mobile Medical of Newton, Texas, the mobile clinic is powered by a 300-horsepower Caterpillar diesel engine. It also includes its own generator, hydraulic leveling jacks for stabilizing the van, full air suspension front and rear, air conditioning and a fully-heated water system for winter use.
In addition to providing comprehensive dental services to underserved children, the van and its staff participate in community health awareness activities such as health fairs, school health education campaigns and conferences in an effort to increase the public’s awareness of important oral health issues and to promote oral health education.
